On United Nations Day 2014, Sustineo would like to acknowledge the important role that the United Nations plays in peace, security, development and human rights.
At a time when more than 1.2 billion people are living on less than $US1.25 ($A1.35) a day and 2.4 billion on less than $US2 a day, the global community should be working and supporting the United Nations family in the eradication of poverty and the pursuit of sustainable development. However, we see the prevalence of conflict in a number of regions, the outbreak of the Ebola crisis in West Africa and humanitarian challenges growing in number. Sustineo notes also notes and supports the Secretary General’s comments on gender equality – “Since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, he said inequality has grown more pronounced and discrimination against women and girls remains "a blatant injustice".
Sustineo applauds the work and staff of all UN agencies in all the countries around the globe and those UN peacekeepers who strive to protect civilians in challenging situations while their families pray for their safe return home.
