Government of Solomon Islands rocked by mass resignations
Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele faces a major threat to his leadership. This comes as ten members of the government resigned. They are from the People’s First Party, which has been a mainstay of the governing coalition. Among those departing are senior members of the cabinet, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Frederick Kologeto. This is the third crisis of leadership that Manele has faced since becoming PM. In April of last year, he survived a motion of no confidence after losing eleven Members of Parliament.
Impacts of war in Middle East
The ongoing war in the Middle East is affecting Pacific island countries in numerous ways. Several Pacific island countries have formally advised their citizens against travelling to Iran and other countries caught up in the conflict. Vanuatu has taken the step of closing its diplomatic mission in Dubai. As the conflict continues, concerns are rising about the economic impact of a spike in fuel and (imported) food prices, with Pacific island countries vulnerable to external shocks of this type.
New Zealand trials cheaper visas for Pacific visitors
The New Zealand government is progressing a 12-month trial of cheaper visas to make it easier for Pacific people to travel to Aotearoa. Speaking with the media recently, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that this was one of several measures planned to make obtaining visas easier, including making them valid for longer periods. However, this does not satisfy the demands of 50,000 petitioners who have called for visas on arrival for those coming from the Pacific.
Japan looks to increase security ties with Pacific island nations
Tokyo continues its push to increase security relationships with Pacific island nations, as a counter to increased Chinese influence in the region. In a keynote speech at the 3rd Japan Pacific Defense Ministers Meeting, Japan's Minister of Defence, Shinjirō Koizumi, proposed a 'multilayered network of interconnectivity' to address challenges including the impacts of climate change and maritime security. He also announced the creation of the Next-Generation Security Leadership program to commence this year.
