PNG has some of the highest rates of family and sexual violence in the world. It’s a critical issue that urgently requires more resources for prevention and support services to bring it under control.
We are acutely aware of the prevalence of this issue, both through various projects we have carried out in PNG over the years, and through the experiences of our local partners in PNG, with whom we have built up close relationships.
Femili PNG is an NGO based in Lae and Port Moresby that runs Case Management Centres to assist survivors of family and sexual violence to access the services they need. They conduct thousands of consultations each year, highlighting the concerning pervasiveness of family and sexual violence across PNG. As well as assisting survivors with safe accommodation and legal support, Femili PNG runs education and awareness sessions, training for case managers and caregivers, and donation drives.
Sustineo’s CEO, Tom Sloan, recently joined the board of Friends of Femili PNG – a support organisation for Femili PNG based in Canberra, Australia.
Tom has been involved in many fundraising pursuits for Femili PNG, most notably completing his first and second half marathons as part of the Femili PNG team at the Canberra Marathon Festival in 2019 and 2020. In April, he’s doing it again in the ‘Sustineo and friends’ team, along with Ellis Mackenzie and Nina Davis!
Now on the board of the Canberra based support organisation, Tom hopes he and Sustineo can continue to make some noise about the cause and contribute to Friends of Femili PNG’s impact:
“This year, I am really happy that Sustineo has our own team entered in the Marathon Festival to support Femili PNG.”
“Every dollar raised helps them help more survivors and educate more people to bring down the rate of family and sexual violence across PNG. We’re proud to support Femili PNG to help improve the lives and communities of one of Australia’s closest neighbours.”
Tom, Ellis, and Nina are all supporting Friends of Femili PNG at The Canberra Times Marathon Festival in April. Show your support and encouragement by donating to this worthy cause here.
